My time as an intern student at The Bishop's Palace

I’m a university history student halfway through my degree. This summer I did a 2-month internship with the Bishop’s Palace in visitor experience and events. That role meant I had the opportunity to help out and get experience in various areas.

Every day was a bit different; sometimes I would be in the ticket office all day, manning the tills or handling stock. Other days you might have found me doing anything from wrangling mannequins into medieval clothing to making paper beetles as part of planning for the children’s craft events.

From the variety of roles my position included, I got good practice multi-tasking and thinking on my feet. Something great about the internship was the progression. I started out helping run set events, and being given little projects, and by the end I could plan some smaller things myself or suggest something new. I was really grateful for how helpful my co-workers were when I didn’t know something and for the faith my managers had in me to handle responsibility.

I got so much practical knowledge in heritage and events planning, as well as more confidence to go into those fields.

Alex also helped on a stall at the Mid Somerset Show and organised the team for the annual moat boat race. We were all dressed as Jolly Sailors!
